English version: Schwarzenegger's statements.

Hace unos días hubo revuelo en varios medios hispánicos por los dichos del “goberneitor” de California Arnold Schwarzenegger, debido a que el pasado 15 de Junio durante una conferencia con la Asociación Nacional de Periodistas Hispanos, pidiera a los inmigrantes latinos que “apaguen la televisión en castellano” para que, de este modo, aprendan inglés prontamente y se integren de manera real a los Estados Unidos.

Estas declaraciones fueron hechas en medio de intensas discusiones en este país que buscan reformar las leyes migratorias, y donde el tema de los ilegales esta muy presente. Es importante también señalar que los latinos se han transformado en la primera minoría del territorio, estimándose en más de cuarenta millones de ellos sobre 300 millones de habitantes.

Curioso es que sea muy difícil encontrar referencias a las frases de Schwarzenegger en los medios anglosajones, salvo de manera breve en el sitio web de la misma NAHJ. Sólo por medios en español es más fácil encontrar la noticia y comentarios respectivos.

Lo cierto es que el tema está presente, por lo menos en estos barrios, en las conversaciones a la hora de comida y espacios similares. Hay un malestar que comienza a aumentar entre los estadounidenses por ese porcentaje importante de estos inmigrantes hispanos que ha llegado a imponer fuertemente sus costumbres y su idioma, escogiendo incluso dejar de comunicarse si no se hace en castellano (de lo cual esta Hormiga ha sido sorprendida testigo varias veces). Que no todos tienen los recursos para aprender la lengua? No hay excusas de pobreza en este sentido, ya que los distintos estados mediante sus community colleges y universidades se han preocupado de implementar cursos básicos gratuitos de inglés y de otras habilidades pensando en la gente que viene ingresando al país. La realidad es que existe una cantidad no despreciable de personas que simplemente no quiere adaptarse.

Se pueden encontrar “gringos” que manejan mayor cantidad de vocabulario en español que la cantidad de palabras en inglés dominadas por estos nuevos habitantes. Las medidas adoptadas por las autoridades hasta el minuto para controlar de manera políticamente correcta la situación, han terminado afectando a otras minorías como la asiática, sin cambiar un ápice el tema de fondo. Al menos para esta cabeza, para dónde iba a desarrollarse el tema en el futuro no estaba ni remotamente clara y decidió pedir opiniones.

Así, conversando con un profesor bilingüe de una escuela primaria perteneciente al distrito donde vivo, me contó que a la larga la resistencia en “pro del castellano” se pierde a más tardar en la tercera generación de erradicados, ya que gracias a los programas de enseñanza bilingüe (incluso para los habitantes sin estatus legal) que existen desde elementary school (equivalente a los primeros años de educación básica) en los distintos estados, los niños aprenden en inglés y terminan, queriéndolo o no ellos y sus familias, siendo parte del medio.

Pareciera que los gringos no serán lingűísticamente invadidos finalmente, y que están encontrando maneras positivas y eficientes de recibir a las distintas etnias que los componen.

Some days ago there was some concern in the hispanic mass media because of the “governator” of California Arnold Schwarzenegger’s words, last June 15th, during a conference with the National Association of Hispanic Journalists (NAHJ), he asked the spanish speaking immigrants to “Turn off the spanish television set” (sic) in order to learn english as soon as possible so they can better integrate in the United States.

This statements were made in the middle of intense discussions in this country that intend to change the migratory laws, where the subject of illegal immigrants is very actual. It’s important to point out that the hispanic population has become the first majority in the country. It is estimated in more than forty million per three thousand million inhabitants.

The difficulty to find references about Schwarzenegger’s statements in english speaking media is curious, except briefly on NAHJ’s own website. It’s easier to find the news and some comments only in hispanic media.

The truth is this subject is present, at least in these areas, in dinner time conversations and similar situations. There is a certain unease beginning to arise among americans because of this high percentage of hispanic immigrants who have arrived imposing their traditions and language, even choosing not to communicate if it’s not in spanish (situation which this Hormiga has been a surprised witness). One could think that not everyone has the money to afford to learn a new language? There are no excuses of poverty in this sense, because the different states through their community colleges and universities have established free english classes and classes of other skills, thinking of people arriving to the country. Reality is that a suprisingly high amount of people simply don’t want to adapt.

You can see american people who handle more spanish vocabulary than english words spoken by these new inhabitants. The measures adopeted by the authorities until now to control the situation in a politically correct way, have affected other minorities such as asian, with no real change in the core issue. At least to my mind, I was unclear as to how this subject was going to develop, and I decided to ask for opinions.

In this way, I spoke with a bilingual primary school teacher from the school district where I live, he told me the “pro-spanish” resistance disappears at most by the third generation in the country, because the programs of bilingual education (even for inhabitants with illegal immigrant status), existing from elementary school up, in the different states, children learn in english and are finally part of english speaking environment, whether they or their parents like it or not.

It seems the US citizens won’t be linguistically invaded, and they’re finding positive and efficient ways to recieve the different ethnicities that make up this nation.

English version: Hormiga's reviews: Children of Men.

En varios blogs, tanto en español como inglés, y en los foros que frecuento, leí opiniones sobre la película “Children of Men” –algo así como “Los niños de los hombres”-. Fueron tan apasionados los comentarios, que apenas pude me inscribí –“hice inscribir” al Hormigo mejor dicho, cof cof xD- en un video club y la arrendé.

Esta película de ciencia ficción (2006) está basada en la novela homónima de P.D. James (1992). Fue dirigida por Alfonso Cuarón, y entre su elenco se cuenta a los actores Clive Owen y Julianne Moore. La trama es sencilla y va al grano desde el comienzo de la película: Inglaterra, 2027. Hace 18 años comenzaron abortos espontáneos masivos y no hubo nuevos nacimientos, dejando a la humanidad a pocos años de extinguirse. Pero repentinamente aparece una luz de esperanza...

Lo que a mi gusto hace de esta una gran película, es la crudeza en la forma de retratar temáticas muy actuales, como la crisis ambiental, los inmigrantes ilegales y una cierta sensación de que algo está profundamente mal, lo que para algunos ya está presente en el escenario mundial. Noticias como la salida al mercado norteamericano de tests de fertilidad debido a lo común que se esta volviendo la dificultad de las parejas acá para concebir a sus hijos parecieran apoyar esta teoría.

In several blogs, in spanish as well as in english, and forums I visit I read opinions about the movie “Children of Men”. The comments were so passionate I joined, well in truth I made Hormigo (my husband) join, as soon as I could Hollywood video and rented it.

This sci-fi movie (2006) is based on P.D. James homonym novel (1992). It was directed by Alfonso Cuarón, and some of the actors are Clive Owen and Julianne Moore. The plot is simple and direct from the beginning: England, 2027. Eighteen years before massive spontaneous abortions began and there weren’t new births, leaving mankind a few years away from extintion. But suddenly there is a glimmer of hope...

What, in my opinion, make this a great movie is the crude way of portraying very current topics such as environmental crisis, ilegal inmigrants and a certain feeling of something deeply wrong that, for some people, is already present in the world. News like the presence in the U.S. market today of fertility tests due to the difficulty to conceive for couples would seem to support this theory.
